Die alte Brücke über die Ruhr bildet den symbolischen Mittelpunkt des Weges und wird gestalterisch als weithin sichtbare Landmarke in künstlerisch skulpturaler Weise überhöht. Sie soll damit einen hohen Identifikationswert sowohl für die lokale Bevölkerung als auch für die Nutzer des Ruhrtal-Wanderweges erreichen und hat somit auch eine langfristige, touristische Bedeutung. Die Gestaltung muß daher bei Tag wie bei Nacht eine gleichermaßen hohe Wirkung entfalten. Die Brücken- und Wegebeleuchtung selbst wird zum integral zu lösenden Teilaspekt der Aufgabe.
Die vorhandene Brücke ist eine gewöhnliche Balkenbrücken aus Stahl ohne jeglichen gestalterischen Anspruch von 80m Länge, die bisher von vier Mastleuchten mit dem notwendigen Licht ausgeleuchtet wird. Die Mastleuchten werden durch acht expressive und skulpturale, an eine Hecke erinnernde Strukturen aus Aluminiumprofilen ersetzt, an denen jeweils 5-6 blattartige Industrieleuchten auf LED-Technik angebracht sind. Der Passant durchdringt jetzt beim Überqueren der Brücke quasi eine symbolische Hecke, die den alten und neuen Stadtteil von Hüsten verbindet bzw. trennt.
An vom Wind bewegten Blättern erinnernd, dimmen bei Nacht die Leuchten im Ruhemodus mit 20-50% langsam auf und ab und sorgen so für das notwendige Grundlicht auf der Brücke. Sobald sich Personen nähern, belebt sich die Frequenz und die Helligkeit erhöht sich auf 50-100%. Sie klingt wieder in den Ruhemodus aus, wenn die Brücke verlassen wurde. Durch die niedrige Wattage der Leuchten und die Verteilung entlang des Weges wird eine insgesamt bessere Ausleuchtung der Brücke bei niedrigerer Gesamtleistung erreicht.
Die Brücken-Lichtskulptur nimmt den Genius Loci auf und vermittelt in ihrer Formensprache zwischen dem Naturraum der Ruhrauen und dem von technischen Artefakten dominierten Stadtraum. Die Brücke wird zum skulpturalen Ereignis mit großer Fernwirkung, das Überqueren der Ruhr wird zum Erlebnis, das im Gedächtnis bleibt und zum Wiederholen einlädt. Die tagsüber schon spektakuläre Wirkung der „Lichthecke“ wird bei Nacht auf lichtökonomisch intelligente Weise durch das animierte Licht nochmals gesteigert.

The old bridge over the Ruhr forms the symbolic centre of the path and is elevated in an artistic sculptural way as a landmark visible from afar. It is intended to achieve a high identification value for the local population as well as for the users of the Ruhr valley hiking trail and thus also has a long-term, touristic significance. The design must therefore have an equally high impact by day and by night. The bridge and path lighting itself becomes an integral part of the task.
The existing bridge is an ordinary beam bridge made of steel without any design demands, 80 m long, which is currently illuminated by four mast luminaires with the necessary light. The mast luminaires are replaced by eight expressive and sculptural structures made of aluminium profiles, reminiscent of a hedge, to each of which 5-6 leaf-like industrial luminaires on LED technology are attached. When crossing the bridge, the passer-by now virtually passes through a symbolic hedge that connects or separates the old and new parts of Hüsten.
Reminiscent of leaves moving in the wind, at night the luminaires slowly dim up and down at 20-50% in standby mode, thus providing the necessary basic light on the bridge. As soon as people approach, the frequency revives and the brightness increases to 50-100%. It fades back to dormant mode when the bridge has been left. Due to the low wattage of the luminaires and the distribution along the path, an overall better illumination of the bridge is achieved at a lower total power.
The bridge light sculpture takes up the genius loci and mediates in its formal language between the natural space of the Ruhrauen and the urban space dominated by technical artefacts. The bridge becomes a sculptural event with a great long-distance effect, crossing the Ruhr becomes an experience that remains in the memory and invites people to repeat it. The effect of the „hedge of light“, already spectacular during the day, is further enhanced at night by the animated light in an intelligent light-economical way.
