(GIMMEABREAK: von englisch: „give me a break“ / „mach mal ‘ne Pause“)

The sculpture with the orange and violet letters disguises itself as an advertising sign. But on closer inspection, it becomes clear that it is not consumer goods or services that are being advertised here, but rather fundamental human questions:

WOHER: where do we come from? WOHIN: where are we going?

These questions and the search for answers are the origin of religion and philosophy. But they are also very topical questions that we ask ourselves every day, or that we should ask ourselves, and about which we are forced to reflect very thoroughly in times of personal or social crisis. This is especially true now during the shutdown as a result of the pandemic – with its global causes and its global effects.

In terms of our togetherness, it is questions that are discussed among friends, in the family, as well as in political parties, when it comes to local, national or global issues. For a migrant, they resonate with a meaning all their own; for young people at the beginning of their life’s journey, they are probably the most important questions of their lives that will be answered in their later actions . . .

The word WOHER shines in violet colour and thematises the past with the coolest shade of red. At the same time, the letters tilt backwards by about 20 degrees. The word WOHIN shines in orange colour and thematises the future with the liveliest shade of red. These letters tilt forward by about 20 degrees.

The letters of the two words are arranged by means of rings fixed eccentrically to a pole on a helix that rises spirally upwards and becomes wider as it does so. In this way, the two words are geometrically intertwined and can be read endlessly one after the other when walking around without beginning or end. A reference also to the fact that the future is always being planned and shaped anew against the background of the past and that the past is always being understood and evaluated anew from the experiences of the future.
